Learning Disability Training Pack
Welcome to the Screening Services Learning Disability Training Pack
This pack has been developed in partnership with North East Wales NHS Trust Community Learning Disability Teams. It has been designed for Learning Disability nurses and other allied Health Professionals to use with their clients to assist their journey through the screening process.
For an holistic approach the pack contains information for the health professional (the Professional Pack) and for the woman with a learning disability ('Having a Smear Test').
The Professional Pack
This pack is designed for the health professional to update their knowledge on cervical screening. The Powerpoint version of the pack includes hyperlinks that signpost the user to other relevant websites for a deeper learning experience.
'Having a Smear Test' Pack
This pack is designed to be used by the health professional to assist the woman with a learning disability to make an informed choice about screening. The pack is divided into manageable sections:
- Section 1 – What is A Smear Test and Why Do We Have Them?
- Section 2 – Preparing for a Smear Test
- Section 3 – Going for a Visit Before Your Smear Test
- Section 4 – Going for Your Smear Test
- Section 5 – After Your Smear Test
It can be used on a one-to-one basis or in group sessions. Suggested ways of using the pack are: online, saved to CD-ROM or print and laminate the PDF version to use as a book.
The Care Pathways included in the pack provide a clear process to follow in relation to consent issues:
- Care Pathway 1 – Informed Consent
- Care Pathway 2 – Unable to Give Informed Consent
- Care Pathway 3 – Smear Test Declined/Refused
- Care Pathway 4 – Consent to Smear Test
The final part of the pack is the Screening Checklist form, designed to ensure all aspects of the screening process have been covered. On completion, the form can be filed in the client notes as evidence that all aspects of health improvements have been covered.
